St. Ed’s awarded Secondary Geography Quality Mark

Congratulations to our Geography Department who have been awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark which recognises excellence in teaching and learning in Geography.

The SGQM is a prestigious award that recognises quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development and learning and teaching in schools. All the awarded schools undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the National Moderation Team were hugely impressed by the manner in which St. Ed’s is embracing new and innovative approaches to teaching geography. The SGQM recognises student attainment, progress and achievement in geographical knowledge, understanding, values and skills, and sets expectations about the quality of teaching in geography. It promotes effective subject leadership and management, helping subject leaders raise the standard of geography in their school.

Upon receiving the award, Mrs Newens our Head of Geography said, "I am delighted that the Geography Association reviewed our submission and granted us the SGQM. They commented on our strong focus on key terminology and liked the use of our 'talk like a Geographer' cards. They also liked the use of our Geography specific targets that we provide our pupils with and highlighted their admiration for our varied curriculum and how it engages our pupils".

Mr Walliker, Headmaster commented, "£many congratulations to Mrs Newens and all of our Geography teaching staff for achieving this very special award. It reflects the school’s overall commitment to providing our pupils with the very best standards in all that we do here at St. Ed's - next time you are in the reception area please do take a minute to look at our SGQM certificate!"
