We Remembered

St. Ed's was honoured to welcome old boy Mr Robert Gale, DSM, Legion D'Honeur to join us as Guest of Honour at our Remembrance Services earlier this term. At the grand age of 94, Mr Gale is one of the few remaining veterans who fought on D Day, landing on Gold Beach at 7.30 am. Recounting his memories to the congregation, Mr Gale described in detail what he witnessed and experienced that day, telling of the unbelievable smoke everywhere and the deafening sounds of the falling shells. Before falling silent in memory of the 81 OSE’s who lost their lives defending our freedom, a selection of our Prep and Senior pupils recited their own War Poems (Clementine Dodson, Jonty Catling, Sophie Broughton, Luca Kella-Hume, Jake Paterson, Bella Mockridge and Benedict Carter) and amongst the moving hymns, the Chapel Choir performed their Choir Anthem, “In Remembrance” beautifully before ending the service with a perfect rendition of “Keep the Home Fires Burning” by Ivor Novello. A mention too for our two soloists who played the Last Post, Charlie Doyle (Senior) and Ralph Anelay (Prep).

A most moving and poignant occasion for all of the children and staff.
