Shah Jahan Mosque

Currently studying religions of the world in their RS classes, Form 3 were lucky enough to have a private tour of the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking this term. The first purpose built Mosque both in the UK and Northern Europe, it was built in 1889 by Dr Gottleib Wilhelm Heitner and has the honour of being listed as a historical Grade II listed building. It is noted that when staying at Windsor Castle, Queen Victoria’s Indian servants prayed there, and these days it plays an important role amongst its busy community. Following their tour, the guide then spoke to the children about the Qur’an and its many chapters and versus as well as the daily prayers that take place at the mosque every day. It was a fantastic visit that certainly gave the children a better understanding of the mosque as well as Islam as a whole.
