Religious Studies
Religious Studies is compulsory for all of our pupils throughout the school and in Forms 9 and 10 they will study the GCSE course over the two years before sitting their exam at the end of Form 10.
An understanding of religion and culture is vital in today’s world. Religion is a foundational part of many aspects of society whether it is morals, festivals or ceremonies and religion has played an essential role in bringing structure to society and guiding the way we relate to each other. The AQA GCSE course provides the opportunity for students to discuss and debate a number of prevalent issues in society in the topics studied, be it the war in Ukraine (Religion, Peace and Conflict), the effectiveness of the prison system (Religion, Crime and Punishment), the application of Human Rights across the world or the different facets of Christianity and Islam – the two largest world religions with around 4.5 billion followers between them.
Through the course, pupils get to wrestle with many philosophical and foundational questions about life as well as seeing how the beliefs and practices of different religions influence people all around the world. They will also develop their writing styles, improving their essay structures and clarity of written expression as they demonstrate their understanding of different points of view.
